I was going to a Comedy Festival event and the Civic car park was full because Dr Hook was playing at the Aotea Centre. A large number of cars headed through the dark to an open air car park nearby.
It was a pay and display car park but there was no lighting over the ticket machine. There was a long queue of people keen to get to their events but the lady at the front couldn’t see to get her ticket. She had turned her phone on but the light from the screen wasn’t bright enough to help.
I looked at her phone and then asked “Is that an IPhone 5?”
“Yes” she replied
“Do you know that you have a torch on the phone and all you have to do is swipe upwards on the screen and it will appear?”
“I took the phone and showed her how to see the screen with all the commonly used functions.”
I turned on the torch and she excitedly paid for her ticket.
Suddenly there was a buzz in the line of waiting motorists.
It turned out that 6 or 7 people had no idea that you could use your phone as a torch. I ended up showing those with IPhones how to find them and some of the Android phones. For others I explained how to download the free “app”.
I finally made it to see the stand-up comedian but it showed me how many people are still nervous around technology.
There are a lot of functions that are already available on your mobile phone so take the time find out about them in the instruction manual. It could make your life so much easier.
